A 12 Unit Historic complex in the heart of asheville, NC

In the wake of the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene, it feels appropriate to shine a light on something positive that came out of the destruction in Asheville, and just so happened to involve one of our biggest projects.

The Furman Ave 12 Unit Apartment Complex

Just shy of a year ago Cindy and I wrapped our Furman Ave project. A 12 unit historic apartment complex in the heart of Asheville that underwent a total renovation and became an incredible short term rental option, one of the very few, located within Asheville city limits. Asheville is no stranger to tourists, and there are a growing number of hotels to book for lodging, but we wanted to create something that would feel more like a home base for those wanting to explore not just Asheville, but the expansive surrounding areas and all they have to offer.

Each unit was designed as a one bedroom apartment with a full bathroom, kitchenette, and small living and dining space. With four units on each of the three floors we came up with the idea to focus our design on one of the key attractions in Asheville - the four seasons of beauty Asheville gets to enjoy every year. We wanted our guests to have a new experience each time they visited, making their way through the seasons each time they stayed.

Our Spring units are filled with soft pastels, easy florals, and photos of well known Asheville spots like the Double Decker Coffee Bus on Biltmore Ave surrounded by spring blooms.

The Summer rooms give a nod to the great outdoors, possibly Asheville’s greatest attraction. We wanted them to feel like you were at a cabin by the lake or river in the summer. Sit in a well loved chair while you plan your next hike in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and decide which festival or concert you’re going to catch while you’re in town.

The Autumn units bring out the rich colors of the leaves on the Blue Ridge Parkway. There is nothing like fall in the Western North Carolina Mountains. There are endless activities within town, but the location of the complex makes it easy to enjoy favored fall activities like apple picking at the local orchards in Hendersonville, NC as well.

The Winter rooms feel like a cozy hug. Winter in Appalachia is the scent of a wood burning fire, the crisp bite of cool mountain air in your lungs, something good on your plate, and maybe some holiday shopping cheer. All of which are at your fingertips at Furman Ave. The Grove Park Inn is minutes away where you can relax with a drink by the massive fires. Or stroll through the Grover Arcade taking in the stunning Christmas decorations while you shop for one of a kind gifts, before enjoying the decadent local fare at any of the various world renowned eateries in town.

A Project of Scale, on a budget

It’s laughable to think about now, but when we first took this project on we thought it would be a simple copy and paste of a design 12 times over. As construction and our site visits began we quickly realized not only did we need to create some differentiation between the units, but also that each unit was laid out just slightly different, meaning even from Summer unit to Summer unit we had to tailor the design to each unit specifically.

At The Nomadic Home our primary goal is to design spaces that maximize functionality while providing durability for high traffic use, a modern relevant design aesthetic, while remaining budget friendly and available on a quick turn around timeline. Through a lot of trial and error we have identified furnishings that we know and trust within a reasonable price range that make it possible to create cohesive, professionally designed spaces in a matter of a few weeks. All of which we had to put into practice to pull this massive design and furnishing project off.

We received access to the complex at the beginning of January and just a month later turned the keys back over with all 12 units ready to rent!

Hurricane helene

When disaster struck in Western North Carolina we couldn’t help but wonder if Furman Ave had been affected by the massive flooding in the Asheville area. Miraculously it was not only spared, but the complex became also became a hub for recovery workers in the area. Our designs meant to inspire and celebrate the beauty of the area became a reminder of what those using them were there to restore.

rave reviews

The reviews have spoken for themselves. Furman Ave, now known as Kasa Downtown Asheville is a great place to stay for your next visit to the Western North Carolina Mountains. But don’t just take our word for it! here’s what some of the guests have had to say…
