a surf chic retreat in myrtle beach

It doesn’t get much better than getting to do design work at the beach. Last Summer we took on a condo project located in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. It was a lovely unit in a hotel turned condo building, long overdue for an update.

The “condotel” as we lovingly called it, was perched right on the beach and offered all the amenities like a pool, lazy river, hot tub, bar and snack shack, and private beach access. Our challenge was to give the condo a refresh, to include some minor renovations, and to refurnish the unit to create a welcome retreat for the owners as well as an attractive short term rental for guests visiting the popular beach town.

flashback to the 90s

The condo was not in bad shape, but it was in desperate need of a facelift. Our clients asked us to consult on the small scale renovations they had planned, so we helped them choose updated cabinetry in the kitchenette and bathroom, a fresh coat of a neutral paint that would make it feel clean and inviting, and some fun tile to add color and whimsy.

For the furnishings, we first noted the need to maximize the available space and bring up the scale of some of the furnishings such as the TV console and bedroom dresser. We also wanted to address the lighting, going for bigger and brighter fixtures that would add texture and interest to the space, replace the drab mismatched furnishings, and add some COLOR! Our goal from the transform it from a typical 90s beach hotel to a fun and functional place to spend your vacation.

the design process

Some of our clients opt for a hands off approach, giving us total control on the design. Others, like in this case, like to give us a style direction then give us free rein to work our magic. We presented our clients with a few coastal themed design options including Coastal Grandmother, Surf Chic, and Modern Coastal. They opted for the Surf Chic style and we were so excited because it was the most fun and exciting of the three.

We wanted the condo to feel like a chic surf shack retreat. An inviting place to hang out after a long day of sun and sand, with comfy furniture, and an eclectic vibe. Here are the final mood boards we presented.

quick turn functionality, long lasting durability

When we are working on the design for a property, we think thoroughly about the location as well, making sure were considering appropriate materials and including accessories that will enhance the guests stay. For the condo we knew guests would likely carry water and sand back with them to the unit. So we chose furnishings that could withstand wet clothes and sandy feet, and be easy to clean. Our goal is always to blend function, budget and durability as well as we can to provide a solid investment for our clients, and one that will last them a long time with high traffic use.

We had just five business days to get in and get out…and we made it in three! We specialize in quick turn design. Striving to design with pieces that are available quickly yet still give you a high end look and feel.

A surf chic retreat

I think it’s safe to say this is still our favorite project to date! We loved getting to spend a few days there pulling it all together and enjoying the beach. If you are looking for a great place to stay this summer check out the condo here!
